Background info

IMsecure was made to be a security tool for MSN Messenger, along with a number of other Instant Messaging software. It provided extra protection against hackers and viruses that you might encounter when connected to an IM service and was able to remove any dodgy URLs, for example links to phising sites or virus downloads, that you were sent in a chat. There were two versions available: a free version and a "pro" paid for version that offers more protection.

However when I say that it was made for MSN Messenger that is exactly what I mean - MSN Messenger not Windows Live Messenger. The last release of IMsecure (version 1.5) was in October 2004, over a year before Windows Live Messenger was even announced.

Most people who installed IMsecure found it a useful tool and just left it to do its job, many even forgetting it was installed. So it was no surprise that when these people upgraded from MSN Messenger to Windows Live Messenger, if they actually remembered about it, they didn't think of uninstalling it as they wanted to continue to get the protection it offered and thought that it would still work exactly as it had done before.

It is now nearly two and a half years since the last version of IMsecure was released, and in this period the protocol that Windows Live Messenger uses and runs on has changed 4 times. Judging by all this, it would be a surprise if IMsecure did still work exactly as it should, and I can confirm that it doesn't. (Just to clarify: ZoneAlarm, the makers of IMsecure, have never said that it supports Windows Live Messenger.)

Problems

The main problem that IMsecure has with Windows Live Messenger is causing it to disconnect you (temporarily sign you out) quite often. The user is then normally faced with up to a 1 minute wait for Messenger to try and reconnect. The other main issue is the huge increase that it causes to the time it takes you to sign in. It seems to nearly quadruple the amount of time it takes, and also makes signing out take at least two times longer.

Many people with IMsecure installed have been experiencing these problems but have been unaware that it is IMsecure that it causing them, hopefully this can clarify the cause and help them.

And how do I know all this? I was one of those people. After uninstalling it not only did I find that Messenger rarely disconnects any more but it is also a lot quicker signing in.

... Finally to the help

So my advice for you: just make sure that you don't have IMsecure installed on your computer, then you can sit back and enjoy a better instant messaging experience ;)
