Oh and I would also like to get rid of that stuuuupid gleam you get when you mouseover the comment or name (at the top of the main window) - its doing my head in. >_<

Please... can anyone help :(
I suggest switching to Messenger Plus! Live's skinning method. This is the modern way to skin Windows Live Messenger, there is a full API and documentation. To add to that there is a large community forums who have expert knowledge when it comes to skinning :):

They can provide you with help on these specific areas. I am only really familiar with MSN Messenger, and I was skinning a long time ago.
